For more than a century, Advocate Health Care has cared for people across Chicago’s South Side. Now, that legacy is entering a new chapter, shaped by the community and built around a bold vision for the future of care.
In June 2026, we broke ground on a new $300 million hospital at the former U.S. Steel South Works site. The facility will replace the current Advocate Trinity Hospital and serve as a modern destination for inpatient, emergency and specialty care. More than 300 community members, elected officials and partners gathered to celebrate the start of construction and what this investment can mean for generations to come.
But this milestone is about more than a new building.
The hospital is part of a $1 billion investment in the health and well-being of Chicago’s South Side. The larger transformation includes neighborhood care locations, expanded outpatient services, community wellness resources and workforce development initiatives designed to bring care and opportunity closer to the people who call the South Side home.
Building something different, together
The transformation began by listening.
Plans were shaped through dozens of meetings and listening sessions with residents, faith leaders, community organizations and other local partners. Community input helped identify priorities related to access, prevention, workforce development and long-term health and wellness.
This approach recognizes that improving health does not begin when someone enters a hospital. It depends on preventive care, trusted local relationships, economic opportunity and services designed around the needs of each community.
Breaking ground for the future of care
More than 300 community members, elected officials and partners gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new $300 million state-of-the-art hospital on Chicago’s South Side. The ceremony marked the official start of construction on the modern facility that will serve as a hub for inpatient, emergency and specialty care.
The new hospital will replace the more than 115-year-old Advocate Trinity Hospital, bringing advanced technology and enhanced care to the community for generations to come.
Why this investment matters
People across Chicago’s South Side experience significant differences in health outcomes and access to care. In some areas, average life expectancy is nearly 30 years shorter than it is just a few miles north.
Expected to open in 2029, the new hospital will provide an updated care environment with modern technology and room to adapt as community needs evolve. Plans include inpatient beds supporting medical-surgical, intensive care, observation and dialysis services, along with emergency care, diagnostic imaging, cardiac catheterization and surgical capabilities. Community-focused spaces are also planned, including walking paths, a community garden and an area for rest and respite.
Together with expanded neighborhood and outpatient services, the hospital will help make care more accessible, connected and responsive to the people it serves.
Creating opportunity alongside better care
A healthier future depends on the people who make care possible.
Through this investment, Advocate Health Care is committing to hire 1,000 new teammates across South Chicagoland. Nurses, physicians, advanced practice professionals, allied health professionals, support services teammates, leaders and many others will contribute to this next chapter. Some will provide direct care. Others will keep facilities running safely, connect people with resources, strengthen operations or develop new programs. View career opportunities here.
Different roles will contribute in different ways, but the purpose is shared: expanding access, strengthening community health and helping create better outcomes for all.

Through mobile hiring events across Chicagoland, we're connecting with candidates who want to help shape the future of care on Chicago's South Side.
“Our patients, physicians and teammates deserve a space designed for how care is provided and delivered today, with the flexibility to meet the needs of the future.”
