For Margo, a Physical Therapist at Aurora Health Care St. Luke’s Medical Center, helping patients regain strength and confidence starts with a simple belief: when you take care of yourself, you’re better able to care for others.

That mindset has guided her throughout her career and is one of the reasons she values working at Aurora. The flexibility and support she experiences allow her to grow professionally while being present for the people who matter most outside of work.

A career that makes room for what matters

As a full-time working parent, Margo appreciates having a schedule that helps her excel both at work and at home. Working four days a week gives her dedicated time with her two young boys while allowing her to continue doing the work she loves.

“The organization’s flexibility with work schedules allows me to give 100% to my patients while fully showing up as a parent,” Margo says.

For Margo, finding that balance means she can bring her best self to every patient interaction, knowing she also has time to invest in her family.

Celebrating every step forward

Each day, Margo helps patients rebuild strength, mobility and confidence following illness, injury or surgery. One of the most rewarding moments is helping a patient take their first steps after surgery.

Watching patients reach milestones that once felt out of reach reminds Margo why she chose physical therapy in the first place.

Whether she’s teaching patients the importance of movement, encouraging them through challenges or celebrating a breakthrough moment, she’s passionate about helping people return to the activities and routines that matter most to them.

Staying active on and off the clock

Outside of work, Margo enjoys spending time with her family and making the most of Wisconsin’s many activities and attractions. From cheering at Packers and Brewers games to visiting the zoo, exploring hiking trails and attending Badger sporting events, she enjoys staying active alongside her boys.

She also prioritizes her own health through running and regular exercise.

“Staying healthy and strong allows me to better help my patients move and recover,” she says.

Why self-care matters

After a decade in physical therapy, Margo has learned that self-care isn’t something to put off until later. It’s an essential part of sustaining a meaningful career.

“Early in my career, I was afraid to use my PTO,” she says. “Now I realize we receive PTO so we can recharge and return refreshed.”

Whether it’s spending time with family, exercising or simply taking a day to reset, Margo understands that caring for herself ultimately helps her provide better care for her patients.

Advice for future physical therapists

For anyone considering a career in physical therapy, Margo encourages them to make their own well-being a priority.

“Dedicate time to yourself and prioritize self-care. Create an identity outside of being a physical therapist. For me, that’s spending time with my family and exercising. When we take care of ourselves, we’re better equipped to help our patients do the same.”

At Aurora Health Care St. Luke’s Medical Center, Margo has found a place where she can support patients through some of their most important moments while maintaining the balance that allows her to thrive personally and professionally.
